To follow up his second single “Hummingbird,” London singer Hira King expands his formula, maintaining a similarly lo-fi aesthetic while channeling the spirit of socially conscious ’70s soul music on new release “Wild Fires / Cold Lovers.” It’s an ambitious three minutes, taking an abrupt turn just past its halfway point and demanding repeat listens to catch its small intricacies, as it fits considerable funk into its computerized soundscape. “Wild Fires / Cold Lovers,” like “Hummingbird,” feels indebted to a few different eras, the sum of which allow it to stand on its own, a unique twist on R&B.
