London singer/songwriter Hira King’s second single “Hummingbird” echoes 90s R&B without falling prey to the pitfalls of cheap revivalism. Skeletal and synth-driven, it roots its melodies in familiar, soulful territory—nostalgic without feeling cliché. It’s a fine line Hira King walks ably on “Hummingbird” and prior single “Run” (which you can listen to below as well), his restrained voice cloaked in comfortable influence, but never indulging in an idealized past or pure copy.
