Sydney-based singer/producer BUOY’s music is as much about texture and mood as it is about the enjoyable surprises that can accompany unusual approaches to structure. Debut single “Took Me Up” seems disorderly as it runs, but its end reveals a circular form that brings listeners back to where they began, providing a sense of purpose that ties together the seemingly random.
New single “Close/Open” builds upon BUOY’s fixation with synth textures and her own vocals. “Close/Open” feels smaller than “Took Me Up,” more intimate though not without its own sense of tastefully executed rise and drama. Building on beautiful piano and burbling electronics, “Close/Open” feels like pretty, little narrative unfolding over four minutes.
