On occasion, we need palette cleansers to cut through the clutter and remind us to take a minute to simply cool out.
Chicago rapper Brian Fresco‘s “Smile More” fits nicely alongside the earthy, laid back grooves his SAVEMONEY brethren have leaned on heavily this year, a smooth, understated instrumental underlying the young emcee’s sharp delivery. It’s not groundbreaking in terms of content, but it seems like a healing balm born of rough Chicago streets (a line in the chorus, “even real n*ggas die where I’m from,” might seem rote in most circumstances, taking on added resonance with the understanding of context). It’s a brief aesthetic smoke brake, a chance to recollect yourself amidst whatever chaos you’re facing.
