In the wrong hands, chopping and screwing is a sloppy way to try and extend the shelf life of a song or album. In able care, it can add trippy new dimension to familiar music. Rarely, though, does it seem such a perfect fit for a remixing tactic as on an album like production duo Blue Sky Black Death‘s Glaciers–reborn as Glaciers (melted).
Full of beautiful textures, airy vocals, and haunting melodies, Glaciers might not be a candidate you’d expect for the chopped and screwed treatment if you grew up on Z-Ro mixtapes, but it’s an excellent strategy for emphasizing the album’s moodily cinematic ambience and taking listeners deeper into the intricate soundscapes Blue Sky Black Death have been honing for years.
