With her follow-up album to 2013’s True Romance due at some point this year, Charli XCX decided to use her recent show at SXSW as a platform for new material. The British singer-songwriter broke out “Breaking Up,” a strutting rock anthem that is something of a departure from the synthy pop jams of her previous LP.
However, while the style may feel unfamiliar for her fans, it’s certainly not a bad change. Charli XCX has pipes, and any format that allows her to show those off is only a good thing. Is “Breaking Up” a result of her recent studio session with Rivers Cuomo? It’s definitely possible, but no word regarding production credits has been given.
