When we introduced you to NY-based indie label GODMODE, and specifically their newest talent Shamir, a few months ago we couldn’t possibly have predicted how fast the upswell of interest in the young singer would be. Since his first song, the throwback house stormer “If It Wasn’t You,” went online about four months ago, Shamir has been covered widely across the blog world and even been featured in GQ and Vogue.

Shamir is a star in the making, but quite apart from the hype or his interesting backstory (he comes from grimy North Las Vegas), he possesses a gloriously unique voice that can be turned to house, disco, gospel, or, as we found out, country music. When he was in New York recently, recording with GODMODE’s Nick Sylvester, Shamir took to the streets of Williamsburg to perform a cover, turning Brandy Clark’s 2013 country song “Stripes” into an intimate acoustic ballad.

Watch the live performance above, and check out our recent interview with Shamir below.

Shamir’s debut EP, Northtown, came out on June 11 via GODMODE. Buy physical here and digital here.
