There is a lot more than gritty, aggressive hip-hop going on in Chicago right now, including a group of young artists doing interesting things in the realms of electronic production-backed pop and R&B. Nigerian-American artist The GTW, who is also a member of JODY and has collaborated with Supreme Cuts, is releasing his debut album Chigeria this summer, with “Calling Cards” being the first single.
The song is delicately mournful, with production that keeps things interesting without ever intruding on the vocals too much, and the video, which is about The GTW spending the last day with his girlfriend before she moves overseas, perfectly reflects that mood.
