The New Wave is a feature we’ll be presenting every Tuesday. It will highlight one song we’re currently obsessed with, by a new or rising artist.

What we say:

This Danish trio is just getting started, but sultry pop gems like “Minds” already have us mesmerized. From their Copenhagen base, Chinah has released three tracks so far, producers Simon and Simon providing subtle electronic backdrops for Fine’s crystalline vocals to soar. On “Minds,” the full extent of their talent is clear, pop songwriting of the highest level mixed with production that shape-shifts from jagged to gloriously smooth in the blink of an eye. Scandinavia stays winning.

What they say:

“All three of us agree that ‘Minds’ has a sound of honesty. It’s a bit difficult to explain. As if one has finally come to terms with something, although still feeling it vividly. It’s settled, but it’s still on. It certainly isn’t a romantic song, but neither is it stone cold realism. It leaves us neither sad, nor happy.

“Also, we hear a soundtrack-vibe in there somewhere… Perhaps it has to do with the somewhat iconic synth theme as well as the simplicity of it all. When we play live, we feel like this track fits well just about anywhere in the set. Sometimes it feels like the only reason why we don’t always open our show with this song is because that means we can’t end our show with it… Lately we’ve been using it a lot as a show-ender… The climax in the end of the song isn’t just that of ‘Minds’; it feels like it becomes the climax of the whole show.”
