Another week, another British vocalist here to demand your attention with an impressive debut. Jorja Smith, originally from Walsall in the Midlands and currently based in South London, is an 18-year-old singer/songwriter who fits writing and recording around shifts at Starbucks.

If “Blue Lights” is any indication, there will be a lot more music and many fewer macchiatos in her near future. The song is a powerful mix of personal observation and social commentary, complete with rap references and even a sample from Dizzee Rascal’s “Sirens,” one of the main inspirations for “Blue Lights.”

"The song is the beginning of my journey, and I wanted to start from home,” Jorja told us. “Back home in Walsall is where I started writing, and this song is influenced by what I grew up around.”

Been blasting that 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' and want some similar vibes but from a new artist? Check out Jorja Smith’s “Blue Lights” below.
