Illangelo has worked regularly with Phlo Finister on music during 2014, dropping a song called “Clockwork” on Bromance Records and giving away a three track EP under the name Youthquaker. Now, the Canadian production wizard has found another vocalist to work with, and the results are impressive. We don’t know much about Chuck Ellis, who has only around 50 followers on Soundcloud at the time of writing, but we’re definitely impressed by his crystalline vocals, which have the same kind of delicacy and clarity as Daniel Wilson, or even Sam Smith.
Of course, this is Illangelo, so the production isn’t straightforward al the way through, starting with pretty piano but eventually adding a string section, percussion, and effects on the vocals that give this song an edge of dark yearning. Check it out below.
