Icebird (RJD2 & Aaron Livingston) - "Charmed Life"

1.

After giving the raw soul sounds of “Going and Going. And Going” a listen exactly two months ago, I was intrigued to see what hip-hop producer turned experimental beat-maker RJD2 could come up when making a whole album with the soulful voiced Aaron Livingston. The first song we heard had more of a rocky edge which maybe didn’t take full advantage of the wonderfully emotion filled, sugary awesomeness of Aaron Livingston, but this second song is a perfectly put together piece of what we might call neo-soul a la Aloe Blacc or Cee-Lo Green.

Give this song a few listens, and I’m sure you’ll agree that this is Top 10 material, with it’s singalong chorus, snapping drums and funky keys all coming together for an eminently repeatable track. Icebird’s album The Abandoned Lullaby will hit the stores October 11th and is available for pre-order on iTunes now. Hit the jump for a brief explanation of this song, as well as the dates of Icebird’s brief October tour.

Icebird – “Charmed Life”

“For me, ‘Charmed Life’ is about struggling to maintain sanity when it seems like the world around you is falling apart,” explains Aaron Livingston, who notes that the song was inspired by a drunken argument with his girlfriend. And while that explanation alone may prove the song title difficult to decipher, Livingston adds, “I’ve been through some difficult things, like anyone, but I’ve also been lucky to do some extraordinary things with extraordinary people, and be involved in some really cool stuff. I really do believe I live a charmed life, though I sometimes forget.”
