A little earlier this month, Venezuelan producer Arca announced that his debut album Xen would be released November 4 via Mute. He also announced a brief DJ tour with Fade To Mind member Total Freedom and visuals by frequent collaborator Jesse Kanda, a visual artist and director. Kanda has provided unsettling, mind-bending videos for Arca himself and FKA twigs (“Water Me,” “How’s That“), as well as designing the striking album cover for twigs’ debut album.

On Tuesday, September 23, Arca, Total Freedom, and Jesse Kanda arrived at Gray Area Art & Technology Theater in San Francisco for the third stop on their five-show west coast tour. Arca and Total Freedom began DJing back to back, playing everything from an edit of Lil Kim’s version of “Hot N***a” to Arca’s newest release, “Thievery.”

Arca and Total Freedom’s musical chemistry is undeniable; at Gray Area, they fused their signature sounds to create a moody and atmospheric show, yet it was still contagiously danceable. Their music, as expected, was excellent, but the rotating imagery by Jesse Kanda made for a truly special evening. Check out images from the night above.
