Chaz Bundick of Toro Y Moi fame is no stranger to releasing music under a different name, having already toyed with dance music on his 2014 debut as Les Sins with Michael. Now he's debuting another new project, and as with Les Sins, it's a completely different sound to that of Toro Y Moi. Unlike Les Sins, however, Bundick is pushing things in the opposite direction of dance music with his latest alias, PLUM.
Debuted via Leaving Records' ongoing Modern New Age series, Bundick's first track as PLUM is already here. "New Globe" finds Bundick moving away from songwriting in the traditional pop song sense, exploring the possibilities of ambient music. There's nothing to dance about to here, but there's plenty to think about. The press release for the new track and alias says that Bundick was inspired by famed new age composer Laraaji, who released a collaborative album with cult favorite experimental musician Sun Araw earlier this year.
It might seem like a big change in direction for Bundick, but elements of his earlier, more lo-fi recordings show up in the tones of the delightful synths featured on the track. As a musician, Bundick has seemingly always sought to reinvent himself, and this is perhaps one of his most interesting excursions in doing so to date.
