In past interviews, Zak Abel acknowledged the importance of songs his mother once played during school-bound car rides. He now channels the emotionally rich records that would fill his head during those early years. That formative audio is at least in part responsible for a voice that sounds more vintage than his age might suggest.
Abel’s newest release finds him partnering up with Kaytranada. Needless to say, the producer suitably complements his counterpart’s croons to an unnamed love interest. Booming drums, reverberated shakers, and a wiggling bass line recall the sounds of a long-gone era.
