After collaborating with fellow Chicago artists like Noname, Mick Jenkins, Chance The Rapper, Joey Purp, and Saba, Zarif Wilder—aka theMIND—finally released his debut project Summer Camp last year. The 11-track project showcased the rising artist’s own sense of style as he mixed R&B with hip-hop.

Today, as he celebrates his birthday, theMIND decides to be the one doing the gift-giving as he shares a brand new single. His latest release titled “Ms. Communication” is a mid-tempo single with a steady bounce that feels meant for a slick two-step.

Montreal-based producer Da-P created this funky rhythm and soon realized “that this particular instrumental didn't need any additional sounds, but a soulful vocalist to fill the void.” Enter theMIND and Sun who created a clever track about how miscommunication can quickly complicate relationships. Somehow, the more platforms we introduce to interact with one another, the worse our communication skills seem to get—like he sings, “This should be more simple.”

The result of the duet is a single detailing the frustrations of dating in the digital age. "It's a song about a being an introvert love or going ‘ghost’ on somebody your talking to. In the perspective of the man doing the ghosting, and from the woman aware of it."
