Many music lovers often visit Genius (formerly Rap Genius) to find out the lyrics to their favorite songs. Genius also provides explanations to the lyrics. Some of these explanations are often just theories but many others have been verified by the actually artist or someone else involved with the song. One of the latest people to attribute annotation to lyrics on Genius’ site is Rick Rubin.

Rick Rubin is a very busy man but he always seems to be willing to share a little insight and knowledge with the public. Rubin has provided annotations for artists such as Jay Z, Wu-Tang Clan, Beastie Boys, Kanye West, and many more. He provided insight on records that he actually worked on and left commentary on songs and artists that he just genuinely enjoys. He left a comment about James Blake saying:

There are so many records now where it’s about really, really heavy sub-bass, maybe a hi-hat, and just a voice.

I think a lot of it is the James Blake influence. I feel like he’s really influenced everybody a lot. I know in the artist community everybody loves Blake. James Blake is spectacular, I love him all the time. Live, he’s even better than on record.

All of Rick Rubin’s annotations provide an interesting point of view to many popular songs and artists. You can read all of his annotations here.
