It seems Grimes is the latest artist to be hamstrung by the business side of the music industry, as she recently posted on Instagram that she will not have a new project out in the near future as was expected.

In a since deleted tweet from February 1, the singer-producer wrote, "...nu one out this year so 3 albums in 6 years is not a bad level of productivity ... 7 years i'd be judging myself a bit," implying that the follow-up to 2015's Art Angel was due out in 2018. Grimes said in an April 2016 Rolling Stone interview that she was "halfway done with another record," and revealed that it would be mellower and more synth-centric.

She's previously spoken out about issues in the industry before, specifically wanting to "be compared to [her] peers who are producers" as well as the warped, problematic gender dynamics between men and women behind the scenes.

Despite the bleak update, we're still holding out hope for new material from Grimes in 2018. Check out Pigeons & Planes' feature on her and nine other artists we want to return this year.
