Jay Som Returns with a Brilliant Bonus Track, "Pirouette"

"Pirouette" didn't make it onto last year's 'Everybody Works,' but it's about to be in your head all day.

Full disclosure: we've been sleeping on Jay Som. I have, at least—"Pirouette" is my introduction, but the song has me going back to the album it didn't make. Everybody Works dropped last March, but "Pirouette" and "O.K., Meet Me Underwater" stayed in the vaults.

The former was unleashed today—"Underwater" will be the other half of a 7" released January 26. “They were fun to write and record but felt out of place on the track list during the finalization of the album," Jay Som's Melina Duterte said in a statement. "These tracks remain close to my heart and I’m really grateful they’re finally out in the world.”

"Pirouette" is the kind of jangly, feel-good guitar rock that could have easily sounded like a million other records. But not in Jay Som's hands—there's a patience to her songwriting that lets each instrument have its moment, no two parts ever really repeating. We might have been slow to join the bandwagon, but better late than never.
