Many musicians go their entire careers without the range of experience Charlotte Day Wilson has packed into her last two years. The Toronto artist has collaborations with BadBadNotGood, Daniel Caesar, and Zack Villere in her rearview, and an impressive solo EP (CDW, released in 2016) to boot. She's spent recent months focussing on her own music—"Doubt" dropped two months ago, and today we're premiering "Nothing New," an incredible and ambitious second offering that was produced, written, and performed by Wilson.

It's a self-assured, wiser Wilson that we're encountering this time around. The creeping synths and detached, sparse vocals are evidence of a new attention to detail and delivery: she hardly raises her voice above a murmur, but when does rise to the surface, those vocals float. Stream "Nothing New" below, then read our Q&A with one of 2018's most exciting rising artists.

What does this song "Nothing New" mean to you and what do you want listeners to take from it?

It’s about recurring themes and issues repeating themselves in relationships. Listeners can take whatever they want from it, but hopefully they can relate.

CDW came out in 2016 - what have you been up to since then? How would you say your sound and approach has evolved since then?

I’ve just been living my life and steadily working on new music. I’ve been experimenting a lot more with my production and songwriting. I’ve been indulging in the darker tones that I shied away from on CDW.

Why did you choose the title Stone Woman for your new EP?

Stone Woman was a lyric I came up with for a song. As soon as the words came out of my mouth I knew there was a story I wanted to tell about this image of cold strength and beauty that I was conjuring in my mind. While I was writing the EP I kept coming back to those two words and I found an identity in them. It helped me understand how my stoic tendencies effect my relationships. It fit perfectly as the title of the EP.
