Now that A Tribe Called Quest's new album We got it from Here... Thank You 4 Your service is finally out, the members have a lot to say about what inspired their first album in nearly two decades. During a recent stop by The Daily Show, Q-Tip discussed the influences on the group's latest album with host Trevor Noah.
For their lead single, "We The People..." make a bold statement with their chorus: "All you Black folks, you must go/ All you Mexicans, you must go/ And all you poor folks, you must go/ Muslims and gays, boy, we hate your ways/ So all you bad folks, you must go." When Noah asked Q-tip why they chose to make such a strong political statement with their lead single, he explained that it was a reflection of sentiments already "brewing in this country."
"One of the things that we have to remember in this society [of] capitalism, is that the bottom line is truly money," he went on. "In order for someone to truly capitalize on a situation there has to be something that's weak... There has to be something or someone that you take advantage of, that you kind of expose and exploit."
With ATCQ's latest album coming out right after Election Day, it only seems fitting that their lyrics would reflect the sensitive topics that are currently shaping the culture. During their short conversation, Q-Tip went on to discuss the tensions in this country led by capitalism, racism, fears, and more.
