New York duo Refs impressed with their debut song “Pain Goes Away” and its darkly humorous accompanying video. Now, they’re back, and two for two, with an intricately produced, electronic pop masterclass titled “Turn Around.”
Driven by crisp, driving percussion, Refs introduce fluttering vocals, gentle woodwind, and see-sawing synths throughout the song, making a surprisingly cohesive end product out of disparate elements. There’s a nostalgia here, but a sense of exploration too—this duo is making music free from genre constraints, and what we’ve heard so far has impressed.
