New London label Sweetboys (great name guys, well done) are debuting with a wildly varied, very impressive EP by a producer called Compton White. “I wrote this in memoriam of going to Happy Hardcore nights at Ryde Pavilion,” he tells us, and whether that means anything to you or not, you should definitely still check out this self-titled EP of hypnotizing beatwork.

Some tracks, like previously released “Track 2” seem to be loose descendants of Madlib or Dilla’s rule-breaking, sample-based hip-hop production, while others, like “Hounslow” are straight low-end club aggression. Our premiere today, “Van,” sits somewhere between the club and Arca’s more abstract electronic experiments—it’s a singular piece of music from a clearly talented producer.

The man behind Compton White is Lloyd Whittle who, we are told, “is part of a generation of Romany Showmen who have settled on the coasts of Great Britain. The seasonal nature of his family’s business put him in a state of constant migration between the ‘island’ and the ‘mainland.’ The EP was written to capture this duality.”

Listen to “Van” below and pre-order the EP, out July 22, here.
