The New Wave is a feature we’ll be presenting every Tuesday. It will highlight one song we’re currently obsessed with, by a new or rising artist.
What we say:
London-based producer and vocalist Benjy Keating has been making enchantingly restrained pop music for a while now as Palmistry, and all his best qualities are on show on his new album Pagan. The album is being released via Brooklyn-based label Mixpak, home to cutting edge dance music (Murlo, Jubilee) and some of your favorite dancehall (Popcaan, Vybz Kartel, Konshens), but Palmistry is forging a path all his own.
“Club Aso” is a sad song, Palmistry bearing his heart and soul with a lilting delivery over production that is stripped down to only the necessary elements. It’s simple but totally effective, with a melody that you’ll be humming for days, and the same can be said of many of the songs on Pagan, out June 17.
What he says:
“Club Aso” is the first song I wrote for my record Pagan. I was living with my friend Daniel in Brixton and he turned me on to the Kurosawa film Ran. I wanted to be far away as I could be from the UK and my situation when I wrote that and there’s a lot of rain in that track.
