Considering the incredible influence of Prince, it’s safe to assume that the the tributes to the late musician won’t end any time soon. Some of the more fascinating tributes have been ones penned by his peers, ones who hold similar influence over the landscape of music who give further insight into Prince’s private life. In a recent exclusive for Rolling Stone, Stevie Wonder shared some wonderful words on The Purple One.
“Prince’s music was so picturesque that even I could see it,” begins Wonder. From there, he describes the vividness of Prince’s songs and the powerful imagery that each song carried. Drawing comparisons to Michael Jackson, The Beatles, and Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder explains why Prince was inspiring to him and so many others, citing his discipline, his kindness, and his fight for artistic freedom.
Wonder also shares the last time he and Prince had spoken, a conversation about how they “needed to fix this world,” condemning the “bullcrap about getting our country back and ‘Make America Great Again.'” Their goal together was to open people’s minds “up to the possibilities.”
Prince and Stevie Wonder have not only previously collaborated on songs (“So What The Fuss,” “I Feel For You”), but Prince also cited Stevie Wonder as an early influence during his interview with Larry King in 1999, especially for the “for the way that he crafted music and his connection to the spirit.”
