For over two decades, there have been strange rumors about Michael Jackson’s involvement with the 1994 Sega Genesis game Sonic the Hedgehog 3. It was already public knowledge that Jackson was meant to work on the game but due to the various scandals surrounding him in the early ’90s, Sega backed down from the collaboration—at least, publicly.
However, there had been rumors that it was actually Jackson who stepped down after being unsatisfied with how his productions sounded with the game’s poor audio quality. With both sides of these rumors swirling around for years, this one grew into quite the conspiracy theory after Sega later denied that Jackson’s compositions were in fact used—especially as fans started to link similarities from Sonic’s soundtrack to MJ’s own music.
A deeper investigation from The Huffington Post unearthed exactly how the rumors began with one super fan of Sonic. It appears that Jackson’s distant relationship with the game was partially due to both the on-going molestation allegations, as well as his feelings about the sound quality. But the important part of the investigation is that fans finally have real confirmation that although he was left uncredited, Michael Jackson indeed composed several tracks for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
