Dev Hynes Talks "Sandra's Smile" With Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig

Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig brought a number of guests on his Beats 1 show this week, and among them was Dev Hynes of Blood Orange fame. On the Time Crisis show, him and Hynes discusses his recent Blood Orange song, “Sandra’s Smile,” which is named after Sandra Bland. After explaining the song further on Genius, Hynes has further elaborated on the song, and why he gave the song the title he did.

He said, “My views on that were that even if police didn’t touch her, they still killed her by the way they treated her. My initial thoughts when the case happened, I was devastated, of course, but it took a couple days before it really hit me in a personal place. … It’s called “Sandra’s Smile” because every photo I saw of her not in prison was of her smiling. … I really wanted to highlight that, this really positive memory of her.”

It’s also worth noting that the show featured an interview with Jason Richards, who runs the brilliant @Seinfeld2000 account on Twitter, and during his conversation with Koenig he revealed his spec script for an imagined Seinfeld episode in which Elaine begins dating one of the Rae Sremmurd brothers (we’d definitely watch that, just for the record).
