At the beginning of the summer, Nicolas Jaar dropped a 20-track album called Pomegranates—entirely for free. After delivering such a generous offer with his free album, as well as releasing his EPs Nymphs II and Nymphs III, Nicolas Jaar is gearing up to release the follow up, Nymphs IV. Jar makes his return in a big way with his latest single “Fight”—a nearly nine-minute-long track that may serve as a preview of what we can expect on Nymphs IV.

Throughout the duration of “Fight,” the track takes multiple transitions—some subtle, some a bit more abrupt—which helps shifts the listener’s focus to the layers of the track rather than the length of it. “Fight” begins sounding hallowed out, with lots of experimental space within the production for scattered vocals from Jaar. Soon it rapidly switches gears to an upbeat rhythm. The dips and dives in the tempo soon follow a circular pattern, switching back and forth in a way that works so well.

Listen to “Fight” below.
