BJ The Chicago Kid‘s latest, “Church,” falls in a long tradition of songs that intentionally mesh earthly pleasures with sacred delights—marking that conflicted moment when one is divided between pursuing heaven with a capital H and the one right here on Earth. On his new single, BJ traverses temptation with a little assistance from Chance the Rapper and Pharrell-signee Buddy over a twisted, multilayered beat, all sultry guitar bends and swollen synths.
“She say wanna drink, do drugs and have sex tonight…but I got church in the morning,” goes the refrain, sort of the flip-side to Chance’s “Sunday Candy” coin. Listen to the new tune, which happens to be the lead single off his upcoming major label debut In My Mind, below.
