Discovering music is a huge part of what we do at Pigeons & Planes. We use tools, a network of like-minded people, social media, and submissions inboxes to keep up with new sounds on a daily basis. More than ever before, it’s possible for musicians to share their songs, and this makes discovering new music a non-stop job.

But every now and then, in our pursuit to find what’s new, we find something old. Discovering music from before we were even born is a magical thing, and sometimes even more satisfying than staying up on what’s new. Hearing something for the first time, decades after it was made, feels like uncovering some buried treasure—to think, we went our entire lives without ever hearing these songs.

The world of music blogging often ignores what’s not new, but every now and then, it’s fun to take a look into the archives. From rarities and album cuts to hit singles that we were severely #late on, here are some of our favorite tracks from the past.

To facilitate the discovery of gems from the past, Spotify has launched Taste Rewind, a web app that curates custom throwback playlists based on users’ recently played artists.. If you were alive in the ’60s or ‘70s, what kind of music would you be listening to?

We used Taste Rewind to make our own ’70s playlist. Check it out below, and make your own playlists here.
