In previous encounters, Atlanta rapper RobOlu’s energy played the primary factor in his appeal—wily like a maniacal fighter crashing over songs like drug-fueled “The Epilogue.” New single “Wazzan” and its simple video showcase unexpected introspection and world weariness on Rob’s part, an exploration of his frustrations as an artist trying to support himself through his craft. There’s a pained irony to the song’s chorus, an awareness of the pitfalls present in chasing the dream and the seeming alternatives: “Lately I been on this assumption/The only way to get money is either trappin’ and thuggin’/But I see all that trappin’ and thuggin’/Ain’t doing nothing if your family still got hungrier stomachs.”
