One of the best features on Ryan Hemsworth’s latest release, Alone for the First Time, came from the relatively unknown Lontalius. Hailing from New Zealand, his softly-sung, almost mumble-like vocals make him stand out in a completely unexpected way. He never really shows off or does anything particularly flashy with his voice, but his sincerity and back-to-basics songwriting is remarkably endearing. Sticking to his strengths, he’s built an impressive catalogue of original songs and inventive covers.

The emotionally charged “i guess itsss” might just be one of his best yet, showcasing his willingness to experiment beyond his roots. More instrumentally layered than the majority of his output thus far, there’s ambition here to create something hauntingly gorgeous. Not only does he capitalize on this ambition, but he also promises more exciting output for the future.

Expect to hear more from Lontalius this year, as his official debut album is due out sometime in the foreseeable future. Listen to “i guess itsss” below, and check out “Light Shines Through Dust” below that.
