Ahead of his scheduled appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon this evening, iLoveMakonnen stopped by Hot 97 to chop it up with Ebro about the roller coaster ride that has been the past few months of his life.
We’ve already known this for a little while, but Makonnen is one of the most fascinating new personalities in music. His story—as revealed through our interview with him back in July—is compelling, his personality is equal parts lovable and complex, and his catalogue is as unique and diverse as any out. In the interview, Makonnen sheds further light on his backstory, expresses his frustration with DJs not spinning any of his music beyond the Drake-assisted “Tuesday” and speaks on his Grammy nomination and his situation with OVO.
It’s a lengthy, 30-minute interview, but one that’s chock-full of gems. When asked about the incident in which he was pulled off stage and swung on at SOBs in late October, Makonnen responds by saying that it could have got ugly and some people would have loved to see that, but that he chose to not fight back because he’d rather contribute to building people up than taking them down. He also references his inner “Red Dragon,” a newfound representation of his character that he’s been pushing heavily on Instagram and Twitter as of late.
