Appleby isn’t exactly an enigma, mostly thanks to how much his music really says about him, but his presence is still mysterious. Off the back of three incredibly strong tracks, he’s found his voice extraordinarily quick. Switching between skeletal yet soulful singing and low-key rapping with ease, his shadowy and gloomy sound is startlingly immediate. “Find” puts more of a spotlight on his rapping than his previous output, and in the process shows the rapid growth of his talents.
Standing as his strongest track yet, “Find” improves upon the loose structures of his previous tracks, with tighter composition and a flowing narrative. Raising countless questions in its relatively brief running time, Appleby paints himself as a fractured and bruised figure with a dark past and a bright future. It’s remarkably effective, showing how fast he’s improving his storytelling techniques as well as his rapping.
