Few artists can truthfully say their music was influenced by a childhood spent in a religious cult. Though she has since abandoned the world of her upbringing (and, as an armchair observer, it’s hard to map its meaning onto her music—especially in a space so cursory as this one), Sydney, Australia-based singer Amy Rose creates a sort of enchanting, floaty synth-pop that feels infused with the whispers of her unique background.

New single “Awake Alive” is as airy and mystical as it is driving, pushed forward by an insistent, restrained beat and Rose’s breathy, pretty vocal. It is cinematic music relaying more in sum total than any of its individual elements alone (and more than my description can capture).
