Perfume Genius makes powerful, personal, often gut-wrenching music, and if “Queen” is anything to go by, his next album will be no different. “Queen” is the first single from Mike Hadreas third album, Too Bright, which will be out September 22 via Matador, and it’s a blinder, all menacing keyboards which explode into a truly anthemic chorus. Once the power of the production has sunk in a little, and you listen to the lyrics, the song will really start to have an impact.
As Hadreas himself puts it, the song is a response to, “faces of blank fear when I walk by…if these fucking people want to give me some power—if they see me as some sea witch with penis tentacles that are always prodding and poking and seeking to convert the muggles—well, here she comes.” It’s a brilliant first single and we cant wait to hear more.
