After a varied series of singles and several excellently executed videos, New York’s Topaz Jones delivers his debut album, The Honeymoon Suite LP. It’s a listen that reveals Jones’ inspirations (various elements of Kanye’s style seem to be a clear points of influence) and aspirations, weaving through a plethora of production styles (sample-based boom bap on “Divas at the Disco,” throwback funk on “Blow Your Mind,” epic ambient on standout “Call On Me,” darkly atmospheric on narrative “Gasping For Breath”) to play the support system to the rapper’s boasts and soul-searching. It’s got bits for different sorts of rap fans, a portrait of a passionate young artist working out the specifics of his style.
