Just before his multiple Grammy wins, including Producer of the Year, Pharrell sat down with Hard Knock TV for a two-part interview in which he dives into various topics while at the studio, of course. He speaks on early influences, citing his “Get Lucky” collaborator Nile Rodgers as a longtime source for inspiration in his life. After discussing his left-of-center way of being, Pharrell speaks at length about his admiration for Lorde and Kendrick Lamar, who he calls two of his favorite artists at the moment, because of their ability to make meaningful music in spite of “the old, antiquated system.” He especially praises Lorde describing her as “today’s definition of a singer-songwriter.” Pharrell also shares an interesting anecdote about Jay Z’s “weird” habit when recording new songs.
