Metallica to Play Concert in Antarctica, Sound to be Transmitted to Audience via Headphones

None

“After over 30 years as a band, we have been unbelievably fortunate to visit just about every corner of the earth . . . except for one,” reads the latest update on Metallica’s website. “That is all about to change as we are set travel to Antarctica, the only continent that Metallica has never played on until now!! We are partnering with Coca-Cola Zero for one of the most unique and special concert events in our career as we’ll be performing near the heliport of the Argentine Antarctic Base Carlini on Sunday, December 8, 2013.”

A Metallica concert in Antarctica is intriguing enough to grab the attention of fans and non-fans alike, but that’s not even the most interesting part. Due to the weather conditions, traveling issues, and the environmental regulations of the continent, the band won’t be bringing amplifiers. Metallica—a band famous for thundering guitars, crashing drums, and roaring vocals—will be transmitting the entire concert to fans via headphones.

Metallica’s concert will take place in a site set up close to the heliport of the Carlini Argentine Base and will have a feature that will make it absolutely exceptional: it will be broadcasted to the audience through headphones.

In addition, Metallica fans of participating countries will be able to enjoy the streaming from Antarctica through the webpage www.coca-cola.tv.”

As The Guardian points out, Antarctica is the only continent that has never hosted a foreign band. The first rock concert ever played there was in 2007, when Nunatek’s Live Earth show was performed in front of 17 people. This should be interesting.
