“Hey Mami” starts with the nothing more than the whimsical, folky vocals of Amelia Meath and some handclaps, suggesting that the song will be some sort of gentle acoustic number. Suddenly though, around the song’s midpoint, pulsating electronics courtesy of Nick Sanborn appear out of nowhere, giving the song a powerful boost, and, somewhat surprisingly, providing the perfect complement to Meath’s vocals. “Play It Right,” arguably the more immediate of the two songs, benefits from Sanborn’s rich electronic production from the very start, but although it provides the song’s driving force, the production never overwhelms the vocals, which remain front and center throughout.

Sylvan Esso’s debut 12″ “Hey Mami / Play It right” is out now. Listen below and buy on Bandcamp here.
