Lord Quas returns this week with a video for “Catchin’ The Vibe” off his most recent Yessir Whatever. Quasimoto (aka Madlib) has quietly continued to craft his own unique brand of think-hop from the annals of global music, releasing a slew of old and new material last month as his first album in eight years. That wobbly, drug-addled saunter that’s inherent to Madlib’s music has the ability to be pretty powerful when he puts his own helium-voiced alter ego behind it.
Visually speaking, the video is an intentionally frayed look at the life of a shaman vagrant, a loose narrative of a homeless man who hand-makes vinyls for the hip-hop heads who stop by his junkyard. It’s strange, disjointed, and a little sad, but what’s really interesting is how directors Tuomas Vauhkonen and Jeremias Nieminen try to mimic Madlib’s beat structure and style in their editing. Check out the video above.
