A little more than a decade after beloved cult-release The Headphone Masterpiece, modern soul man Cody Chesnutt returns with sophomore release Landing on a Hundred. Hundred ditches Masterpiece‘s audibly lo-fi aesthetic–Chesnutt’s debut was notably recorded in the singer’s bedroom; in its place, a new sheen of polished, studio production elevates Chesnutt’s bravura and songwriting, crafting an album with the classic sounds of 70s soul and an edge that keeps it contemporary. It’s certainly not something you’d throw on in the club (unless the club was, of course, from Shaft or Superfly), but it’s a lovingly crafted throwback that feels relevant because of its devotion to detail and rich song craft.
