Reps for Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre are discussing the possibility of a tour with the two veteran rappers and 2Pac’s hologram, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Digital Doman is the company that made the hologram happen, and their Chief Creative Officer, Ed Ulbrich, stated, “This is not found footage. This is not archival footage. This is an illusion.” This means that a 2Pac tour wouldn’t be recycled footage from old Pac shows, but all new creations of the deceased rapper’s look-alike “performing.”
“This is just the beginning, Dre has a massive vision for this,” Ulbrich added.
It’s a difficult thing to wrap your head around. On one hand, the idea of seeing legends like 2Pac, Biggie, Kurt Cobain, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Marley is exciting. New generations would get to witness the closest thing possible (as of now) to a live performance from these iconic musicians. On the other hand, it’s exactly what Ulbrich said it was: an illusion. 2Pac is dead. 2Pac was not on stage saying, “What the fuck is up Coachella!?” Coachella did not even exist when 2Pac was alive.
With this type of hologram appearance, we’re toying with the stories of some of the greatest to do it, and we’re doing it for the sake of our own entertainment. It brings up all kinds of questions as to where the boundaries are for this hologram technology, and it will bring up all kinds of issues when those boundaries are tested. After the excitement settles, will there be an odd feeling in the pits of our stomachs when we think about what we’re doing? Probably. But are we entertained? Hell yeah.
