DJ Sliink recently dropped a bomb on the dance music community when he let it be known that his EP project has grown into a full-blown album, which he is hoping will be his masterpiece. Being that we're both from New Jersey, and have been fans of the inescapable Jersey club scene for years, this news holds some weight for us as fans and followers of New Jersey's contribution to the worldwide dance music scene. With new names popping up in the "club" scene, both nationally and across the globe, this project could be seen as Sliink flying the flag for the Jersey club scene.
With all of that said, we have some things we hope to not only hear on the album, but that we hope would come about due to the album being released. We're not playing armchair A&R; Sliink is an artist and will do as he pleases. For us, though, we are greedy, and would love to see Sliink not only bless us with some fresh tracks that we can get right to, but that he wins on a number of different fronts. So here are a few of the things we wish happens with DJ Sliink's album.
He produces a true Jersey club single that has a major impact on the charts
While the Jersey club scene has been around for a while, we've not truly seen a Jersey club track "blow up" in the dance music scene, especially in today's EDM world. It'd be fresh for Sliink, who's put the scene on his back and has helped bring the sound to the masses more than others who are getting acclaim, to be the producer that achieves that height. And while what a song does on the charts doesn't have much bearing on the court of popular opinion, we want both Sliink and the club scene to win, and having those accolades to hold your hat on can be enticing.
Guest appearances from big rappers
DJ Sliink has a knack for remixing the latest in the hip-hop and R&B realm. While it might not be easy to get a 16 on a Jersey club track, Sliink also dabbles in the trap sound, so why not get someone of name to contribute some bars? Be it Kanye West reliving what he did for DJ Class or A$AP Ferg crafting a true club banger, it'd be dope to cross the worlds of dance music and hip-hop even deeper with an official collaboration.
Healthy collaborations with interesting names in the dance music scene
When tracks like the massive "Crowd CTRL" came out, many knew (or finally realized) that Sliink was a viable name in today's EDM scene. And while working with Flosstradamus on a massive trap track will obviously get the ball rolling for anyone, we'd love to see what he'd do with, say, a solid vocalist who can provide a room-filling song that is accented by the fire we hear in Sliink's remix work. Or collaborating with producers we wouldn't imagine him linking up with, possibly crossing the club sound with other forms of dance music.
One record that unites the club scenes
This is one of those statements that sounds great in theory. We can't quite wrap our head around how there isn't more collaboration between these regions (Baltimore, Philly, and Jersey) on club records. Sliink is moving at a level where he can reach out to people that most people can't, and we'd love a collaborative tune between all three cities. Unity in music, if you will.
Doors being opened for Sliink
In the EDM world, Sliink's stock has truly risen. 2012 and 2013 saw him releasing singles with Flosstradamus on Fool's Gold, getting hit up for remix work, and touring the world (check out the above picture, from Russia, with some monkeys). Hell, he's even helped showcase fly Casio synthesizers. What we'd love to see are either more singers looking to get that creaky Jersey club bed squeak to their seductive soundscapes, or a crew like MMG or G.O.O.D. Music linking up with the don to add some edge to their productions.
A real interest in the Jersey club scene from the mainstream
Trends come and go, and following new scenes on the Internets can lead to the quick rise and slow death of a plethora of genres. The club scene has existed for years, but its through outlets like Diplo & Friends where DJs who have names but not the cred in the scene to truly give new fans an idea of what said scene is truly about. We hope that Sliink dropping an album can get those who are new to the scene truly invested in its cultivation, as well as recognizing the club forefathers.
