My word. When we saw that Joker announced that his sophomore album, The Mainframe, was set to drop via his Kapsize imprint in February, we were definitely wondering where he was going to take us. "Boss Mode" is huge, but the majority of these bits were new to us. Today, Annie Mac got the world exclusive on the album's first single, "Midnight," and MY WORD this is a banger. When people use terms like "purple" to describe a particular sound in the bass music realm, it's because of tracks like "Midnight," or it should be. This thing feels regal at times, but also usher in some pitched-up vocals, and still maintains a dense, rich low-end. Jeremih might've coined the term "clatchet" to describe his form of R&B, but I feel the "classy ratchet" vibe might fit for "Midnight" as well. Good thing for us, this bit will drop on December 8.
