Seeing as I'm an old ass man, I've listened to my fair share of hip-hop throughout my time on this blue Earth. I've seen styles birthed, get utilized by anyone with a mic and enough loot for studio time, and then tossed away, waiting for the next thing to pop. It's amazing to think about how much has transpired so far in 2017 in the world of hip-hop, let alone taking it back to the '70s and reminiscing about how the music of my life has changed. That's why you need DJs and curators to help contextualize the many moves the world of hip-hop has made.
With that said, you need to stop what you're doing right now and soak in the Hood Internet's "40 Years of Hip-Hop," which is one of the illest looks at the last forty years in the world of hip-hop told through the lens of 100 artists, featuring everyone from the Beastie Boys, Ludacris, De La Soul, MF Doom, the Fugees, Three 6 Mafia, House of Pain, the Game, and many, many, MANY others. We're talking over 150 tracks, and one of the keys is that instead of just quickly mashing hit after hit after hit, the Hood Internet dived into the lyrics, splicing lines from one artist and making another finish the bar, all over an array of banging instrumentals. It's truly one long-ass mash-up, with a shedload of source material.
