Biggie’s “Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems” rings true for most individuals who run into even a little bit of cash, but on the same token, for some rappers, making money is no problem.
As album sales dwindle across the music industry, the richest musicians no longer depend on royalty checks from labels to fatten their bottom lines. Rappers see themselves as brands now, and in any field, the best brands make the most money. As Jay-Z once famously rapped, “I’m not a businessman, I’m a business, man.” It's since become the model for how hip-hop artists accrue wealth.
With figures pooled from Forbes, celebritynetworth.com, and therichest.org, we briefly explore how 20 of the richest rappers in the game stepped up their hustles and made millions.

20. Rick Ross
Net Worth: $25 million
Hustles: Maybach Music Group, Wingstop franchises, and Reebok endorsement.
Rick Ross may rap about making money in totally illegal ways, but he's about his legitimate paper too. The Boss has invested in Wingstop locations across the country, and Swizz Beatz got him to join Reebok in 2012 to help promote and design a Big & Tall line for the sports apparel company. Rozay's wallet is just as large as his frame.
19. T.I.
Net Worth: $30 million
Hustles: Grand Hustle Records, Club Crucial nightclub ownership, VH1 reality show, various acting jobs, endorsements with Chevrolet, StreetCred.com, AXE body spray, and Rémy Martin Cognac.
The self-proclaimed "King of the South" once was the King of Endorsements too. From 2007 to 2010, he racked up multiple deals, and was even named the Global Creative Consultant of Rémy Martin Cognac, with an eye towards developing his own liquor line. Due to his multiple arrests and jail time, however, he's now lost all of his endorsement deals. He has a new album due later this year, so with a strong release and a clean record, Tip could get back to that corporate dollar. In the meantime, he's certainly earning from his successful VH1 reality show.
18. Andre 3000
Net Worth: $45 million
Hustles: Outkast record sales, Gillette endorsement, Benjamin Bixby clothing, various acting jobs, and TV series production.
A solo album would be nice, but Three Stacks has been pretty preoccupied with his growing acting career. After producing his own animated television series for Cartoon Network in 2007, Andre has appeared in two movies, and is set to star as Jimi Hendrix in a 2013 biopic. That Hollywood money adds up.
17. Nelly
Net Worth: $55 million
Hustles: Derrty Entertainment, various acting jobs, endorsements with Air Play car fragrances, Ford, Reebok, and Got Milk.
For the most part, the third best-selling artist of the 2000s has let his records collect cash for him. But with a Ford endorsement in 2011 and appearances in six film and television titles, Nelly's become a well-rounded entertainer for companies to bank on.
16. Busta Rhymes
Net Worth: $60 million
Hustles: Conglomerate Records, Pepsi endorsement, and Venom energy drink.
While Venom energy drink hasn't gone anywhere, his partnership with Pepsi has been more fruitful. In 2008, he appeared in Super Bowl ads for Pepsi Max, and did further promotional work for the product. A new record deal with Cash Money and features on No. 1 hits like Chris Brown's "Look At Me Now" have both definitely helped fatten Busta's wallet, too.
15. Ludacris
Net Worth: $65 million
Hustles: Disturbing Tha Peace Records, various acting jobs, ownership in Conjure Cognac liquor and Soul headphones, and TAG body spray and Pepsi endorsements.
Ludacris has made a ton of his money outside of music, via alcohol and performance headphones. Since 2010, he's been a co-owner of Soul headphones, which goes head-to-head with Beats for marketshare. His acting career has taken off as well, with roles coming in more consistently now that he's less involved in music.
14. Swizz Beatz
Net Worth: $65 million
Hustles: Full Surface Records, Kidrobot endorsement, Reebok endorsement, Lotus car designs, and Microsoft Bing endorsement.
As Reebok attempts to rebrand their apparel, Swizz Beatz is busy leading the charge. Since partnering with the company in 2010, Swizz has been relentlessly promoting all Reebok products, including the sneaker line he has with them. He's done notable (and profitable) work with Kidrodbot, Microsoft, and Lotus, too.
13. Timbaland
Net Worth: $75 million
Hustles: Mosley Music Group and Le Sutra Liquers endorsement.
Timbaland doesn't have any major investments or product endorsements, but as one of the most in-demand producers in music, he doesn't really need any. Work with Jay-Z, T.I., Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, and Drake has kept Timbo's finances healthy.
12. Pharrell
Net Worth: $77.5 million
Hustles: I Am Other, Star Trak Entertainment, A Bathing Ape, Billionaire Boys Club, Ice Cream Footwear, Bee Line, Domeau & Pérès furniture designs, Rizzoli Publications book deal, Louis Vuitton eyewear designs, Brooklyn Machine Works bicycle designs, and KarmaLoopTV's Creative Director.
Many hip-hop artists have major clothing lines, but few are as successful and influential as Pharrell's Billionaire Boys Club. Launched in 2005, the brand continues to be an integral part of streetwear culture. Beyond that, Pharell sees himself as a designer of all trades, working on leather bicycles, books, and creative content for KarmaLoopTV. He's been one of music's premier producers for over a decade, and to boot, he's become a creative cultural icon as well.
11. LL Cool J
Net Worth: $80 million
Hustles: Partial ownership in FUBU, Todd Smith, and Najee clothing, author of four books, Boomdizzle.com founder, and Old Spice endorsement.
In the '90s, LL's endorsement had everyone rocking FUBU. By 1999, FUBU sales reached $200 million, and even $380 million in 2004. Although he had a falling-out with the company in 2005 over claims that he wasn't properly compensated, LL still made a respectable sum from his involvement with the company. Then, of course, there are his numerous record sales and film roles. These days, LL earns from an Old Spice endorsement and roles on hit shows like NCIS and Hawaii 5-0.
10. Kanye West
Net Worth: $90 million
Hustles: G.O.O.D. Music, DONDA, womenswear line, and sneaker designs for Nike and Louis Vuitton.
Despite deals with Pepsi and Absolut in the past, Kanye no longer has any endorsements. That's because he's too concerned with building his own empire. Back in January, he launched his creative company DONDA via a Twitter rant. His $250 Nike Air Yeezy II was the most sought-after sneaker of the year. He also has his own high fashion womenswear line and a successful record label, G.O.O.D. Music.
9. Lil Wayne
Net Worth: $95 million
Hustles: Young Money Records, Trukfit, Young Money Cards, and Mountain Dew endorsement.
It feels like Lil Wayne has plugged his new skateboard brand Trukfit on just about all of his songs this year—his verse on "Pop That" has four Trukfit mentions alone—and with Macy's making a multi-million dollar purchase of apparel, we understand why he does. In addition to a new deal with Mountain Dew and his prepaid debit card company, Weezy is the boss over at Young Money, home to superstar artists Drake and Nicki Minaj.
8. Ice Cube
Net Worth: $100 million
Hustles: Various acting jobs, Solo by Cube clothing, and Coors Light endorsement.
A far cry from his N.W.A. days, Ice Cube has more movie credits than albums these days. But with a $100 million net worth, you can bet that the legendary L.A. MC is more than proud of his switch to the silver screen. His new Coors Light commercials are pretty funny (and profitable), too.
7. Snoop Dogg
Net Worth: $110 million
Hustles: Doggystyle Records, various acting jobs, and endorsements with EA Sports, Adidas, Pepsi, 7-Eleven, Serious Pimp clothing, Vybe Mobile, Norton Antivirus, TomTom navigation systems, WRFF scooters, Global Gaming League, Rich & Infamous streetwear, Chronic Candy, Chrysler, and Orbit Gum.
Snoop has the longest list of endorsements. It seems like he'll sign off on any product that offers to carry his name. His partnerships are very diverse, too. Snoop makes money on everything from weed candies to GPS navigation systems. This year, he's been heavily involved in FIFA 13's North American ad campaign, helping to make it the fastest-selling video game of 2012.
6. Birdman
Net Worth: $115 million
Hustles: Cash Money Records, Cash Money Books, and the Birdman Shoe Collection.
Birdman has never been afraid to flaunt his wealth. He's given Lil Wayne a $1 million watch, claiming to own over 50 cars, and regularly stunts courtside at Miami Heat games. Cash Money signed a $30 million distribution deal with Universal in 1998, but it expired this past summer. With the success of Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Lil Wayne, a bidding war for Cash Money should reap huge sums for Birdman. That doesn't sound like "baby money."
5. Eminem
Net Worth: $120 million
Hustles: Shady Records owner, and endorsements witg Chrysler, Lipton and G-Shock.
Eminem doesn't tour much, and he doesn't have an extensive list of investments and endorsements, so the bulk of his net worth comes through his record sales. He was the best-selling artist of the last decade, and his last solo album, Recovery, was the best-selling album of 2010. The music industry is in rough shape overall, but Eminem's sales continue to shine.
4. 50 Cent
Net Worth: $250 million
Hustles: G-Unit Records, Vitaminwater, Street King energy shots, SMS headphones endorsement, ÜberMedia's Über50 app, and various acting jobs.
50 Cent's $100 million Vitaminwater deal in 2007 was one of the biggest celebrity pay-outs of all-time. Since then, he's continued to find revenue streams in the beverage game, launching energy drink Street King in 2011. He also endorsed SMS headphones in 2011. Although he hasn't had an album in stores since 2009, 50 Cent hasn't needed the music money upon which much of his fortune was built.
3. Dr. Dre
Net Worth: $270 million
Hustles: Aftermath Entertainment and Beats Electronics ownership.
Dre's headphones are everywhere. Alongside cell phones and iPods, his Beats by Dre headphones are among the most ubiquitous products in the street today. Along with Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine, he sold 51% of the company to HTC for $300 million, giving him $85 million after taxes. He still has a $100 million stake in Beats Electronics, which should only increase under HTC's guidance. It's no wonder he hasn't bothered to release Detox.
2. Jay-Z
Net Worth: $475 million
Hustles: Ownership in Roc Nation, Rocawear, the 40/40 club, the Brooklyn Nets, Translation Advertising, The Spotted Pig, Buffalo Boss, Wings, Viddy, and Armand de Brignac's Brut Gold (Ace of Spades champagne). Endorsements with Reebok, Hewlett-Packard, Carol's Daughter cosmetics, Duracell PowerMat, Bacardi D'ussé, and Budweiser.
Jay-Z got his first taste of corporate, non-music-related paper thanks to a clothing company. In 1999, he co-founded Rocawear, only to assume majority ownership in 2006, and sell the rights to the brand for $204 million a year after, but still retain his title as CEO. Now, the reported $1 million investment he made in the Nets in 2005 is paying dividends, as he leads the team to greener pastures in Brooklyn. Hov disputed how much he owns in the Nets during his Barclays Center concert series, but when he's more valuable to the Nets brand than the players, who's really keeping track?
1. Diddy
Net Worth: $550 million
Hustles: Ownership in Bad Boy Records, Ciroc vodka, Sean John and Enyce clothing, Blue Flame marketing agency, and Revolt cable channel, with investments in various tech start-ups, along with various acting jobs, and a Beats Electronics endorsement.
Can Diddy become hip-hop's first billionaire? Sean John clothing was Diddy's first business venture outside of music. Founded in 1999, the company peaked with $450 million in sales in 2004. While Sean John is still a major player in Diddy's bottom line, Ciroc vodka has been his biggest paycheck as of late. Sales of Ciroc spiked 122% last year thanks to Diddy's relentless promotion. Forbes estimates that he'll be entitled to a nine-figure cut of cash if Ciroc is ever sold.
