The town of Wellingborough may be relatively small, but it seems to be punching well above its weight in terms of the amount of talent it’s churning out. The latest name to emerge from the Northants borough is Montz, a rising rhymesmith borrowing pieces from rap and drill to create something high-energy without resting on easy gimmicks.

New drop “Gxn Powder” is probably the most successful example, applying the bass and energy of drill with the frostiness of rap. And although the backlash against sample drill may have culled a lot of the by-numbers approaches, there’s still room for tracks like this where a smartly-executed sample of U.S. R&B singer Ann Marie’s vocals from her 2021 song, “Hate Love”, supplements the track rather than carries it.

The rapper is relatively early in his career, with only a small handful of tracks out in the world, but it seems like things are gathering pace. Newly reunited with his team, press play on the VisualPluggHD-directed video above to get yourself caught up.
