One of UK rap’s rawest talents, J Spades is back with 100, a seven-track, all-killer mixtape without an ounce of fat.

We got our first taste of the project with “Cartier Frames” last summer, a track that sums up the project perfectly with its high-life title and barbed rhymes spat through gritted teeth. Similarly, much of the tape balances toasts to the success Spades enjoys today while acknowledging the darker world he came from.

“Fans always tell me they want music reminiscent of the classic More Money More Pagans mixtapes,” J Spades tells Complex UK. “While some of that energy’s there—especially on ‘Cartier Frames’ and ‘Respectfully’—I also wanted to give the people something a bit smoother-sounding with this new project, which is mostly about the support system from people in today’s climate.”

100 boasts just two features—Abra Cadabra and Abel Miller—but they’re put to good use. Abz is back on his diesel-throated rap grind and he’s the perfect sparring partner for Spades who’s got a belly full of fire on “Badness”. UK R&B singer Abel Miller, meanwhile, brings out something entirely different, tempering Spades’ grit with some silky, high-end melody on “Hennessy”.

Production comes from SantanaStar Beats, Jusa Riddim, Liam Payle, Jae Smoove, and Beatboss, and they’ve put together a rap framework that brings out the best of J Spades’ patois-glazed rap.
