ENNY’s New 6-Song Care Package, ‘We Go Again’, Is An Essential Listen

A lot has happened in the two years since that EP and her sounds grown a lot, taking in different strains of rap as well as bossa nova, lo-fi, and soul.

ENNY 'We Go Again'

For the past six months, ENNY’s been hard at work carefully laying the groundwork for her latest batch of songs, We Go Again. Billed neither as an EP nor a project, the new six-tracker, she says, is a ‘care package’. We heard one of the tracks, “Champagne Problems”, back in October last year, followed by a remix featuring Unknown T and then the tongue-in-cheek “No More Naija Men” earlier this year.

It was until late March that ENNY officially announced this care package was on the way. Produced by Paya, Emil, Yogic, Baker Aaron, Beat Butcha and Linden Jay, with a guest appearance from Loyle Carner, it continues a lot of the thematic threads laid down by Under Twenty Five, but a lot has happened in the two years since that EP and her sounds grown a lot, taking in different strains of rap as well as bossa nova, lo-fi electronics, and soul, while still keeping that inimitable ENNY sound running through.

Alongside We Go Again, ENNY’s also shared a new visual for its third single, “Charge It”. Directed by Otis Dominque and ENNY herself (in her directorial debut), the aesthetic digs deeper into the ‘70s glamour that she’s been toying with lately. Mixing elements of a Starsky & Hutch-style cop drama into what is essentially an anti-breakup message about overlooking your partner’s shortcomings and “charging it to the game”, it’s an engrossing cocktail of brown leather, big flairs, and permed hair.

Speaking on We Go Again, ENNY says: “After I dropped my first EP, I was so convinced I’d never drop another project again because I felt like I had said everything I wanted to say.  These songs weren’t made to be a project—they were created in random pockets of sessions throughout the past 18 months, but life has turned them into a gift; a gift of growth and change; a gift to myself as a reminder that I’m still capable; and a gift to the people that have joined me so far on this journey. A care package. I think the development of this project is a part of the journey of tracking my growth as an artist and as a young woman. I’m happy that I’ve been able to work with such an amazing range of producers even in some of the most unconventional ways. But it reminds me there’s no formula to creating—it just happens when it needs to. Even co-directing the video for ‘Charge It’ with Otis was such a beautiful moment for me. It’s nice to step into new versions of yourself.”

To celebrate the occasion, ENNY will also be headlining a show at Omeara at the end of this month (April 27). Before you scramble to get your ticket, hit play on the “Charge It” video at the mid-point and then dig into We Go Again in full below.
